Dallas ISD will expand its Accelerating Campus Excellence (ACE) program to eight additional campuses for the 2020-2021 school year. This initiative incentivizes top teachers and principals to voluntarily work at the district’s highest-need schools, ensuring the best educators are in classrooms where they are needed the most. Since its inception in 2015, ACE schools have shown a continuous improvement by combining effective instruction, additional learning time, and social and academic skill-building. Trustees unanimously approve plan to address three schools most damaged by October tornadoes

Following the Oct. 20 tornadoes that caused extensive damage to the campuses, Dallas ISD trustees unanimously approved a plan Thursday night to renovate Thomas Jefferson High School and build a new consolidated pre-K through eighth-grade campus to replace Walnut Hill Elementary School and Cary Middle School. The goal is to have students attend the permanent locations for the 2022–2023 school year. Under the approved plan, much of the existing TJ campus will remain and receive needed renovations. Sunset High School is launching a new Criminal Justice Academy in partnership with the Dallas Police Department (DPD). Upon successful completion of the program, Sunset Law Academy graduates will meet all the educational qualifications to apply for a police officer position in DPD. Sunset becomes the latest Dallas ISD school to formalize a law program towards an associate degree with law enforcement training. David W. Carter and Bryan Adams high schools already collaborate with DPD to produce police officers who can serve Dallas communities. Two of 11 finalists have been named Dallas ISD 2019-2020 Teachers of the Year! Eric Hale from David G. Burnet Elementary School is the Elementary Teacher of the Year and Katie Benningfield from the School for the Talented and Gifted in Pleasant Grove is the Secondary Teacher of the Year. The winners were announced at a special reception on Jan. 22 where they were each presented with $5,000 checks from H-E-B/Central Market.
