The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available now for the 2018-2019 school year to apply for financial assistance to pay for college or career school. Students planning to apply for financial aid through FAFSA are encouraged to do so as soon as possible. Schools have various deadlines for accepting aid, and the federal deadline is June 30, 2019. Students in Adamson High School’s automotive technology program enjoyed a special guest speaker this week: John Kraman, the commentator for Mecum Auction’s TV broadcasts. Kraman talked with auto tech students about the collector car market and opportunities for students to apply their skills within the industry. “With your knowledge and passion, you have a huge step up on your peers if you start looking for jobs in the automotive industry after you graduate,” Kraman said. “I commend you for taking the initiative. Attending parent/teacher conferences is a small step that can achieve big results for students. It is well known that students whose parents or guardians are involved in their education perform better in school. Parent-teacher conferences for high school students are Monday, Oct. 8; conferences for middle school students are Tuesday, Oct. 9; and conferences for elementary students are Thursday, Oct. 11. On Monday, Oct. 1, M.B. Henderson Elementary School—along with 10 community partners from the Federal Reserve Bank and four parent volunteers from the community—joined together in the library media center to read aloud to students from books written and/or illustrated by Hispanic Americans. This yearly event organized by librarian Ms. Dowell reinforced the importance of literacy as a skill that requires mastery, as well as showcased the cultural and literary contributions of Hispanic Americans to the development of the United States. Los estudiantes de L.V. Stockard Middle School concluyeron la semana “Education Go Get It” con una divertida competencia de decoración. Los pasillos del sexto grado fueron adornados con símbolos de universidades locales, los del séptimo grado con universidades estatales, y los del octavo grado de universidades reconocidas internacionalmente. Shannon Kline, a second-grade teacher at Anson Jones Elementary School, was surprised with a $10,000 check after being named a recipient of the Sanford Teacher Awards. Kline was one of five inaugural awardees who demonstrate the qualities of inspiring teaching. Sanford Programs and the National University System hosted the awards. After being surprised with the award, Kline teared up and thanked her fantastic students. “This is my inspiration right here,” she said, pointing to the students. “These kids are my heart.” Go here to see video of Kline being surprised with the award.
