The Adamson High School Alumni Association will hold its 19th Annual All-Class Reunion at the school on Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Located at 309 E. Ninth in Oak Cliff, W. H. Adamson High School is the oldest continuously-active high school in the Dallas Independent School District. A group of students from the School of Business and Management are headed to New York to compete in the semi-finals of the 2019 Euro Challenge at the Federal Reserve Bank. The students will compete against 24 other teams from across the country by showcasing their financial literacy and knowledge of the European Union and its single currency, the euro. Participating teams will prepare a detailed presentation of current economic conditions in one of the 19 countries that share the euro, and proceed to make policy recommendations to improve that country’s competitiveness, human capital and sustainable growth. Giselle Aguilera, a fifth-grade student at the School for the Talented and Gifted in Pleasant Grove, represented District 5 at the Bluebonnet Luncheon on Wednesday, April 17, 2019. Aguilera is a leader (fifth-grade student council president), a reader, and an athlete. She participates in many other extracurricular activities, including soccer. A special ceremony celebrated more than 450 Dallas ISD seniors who completed a NAF Academy. The Dallas ISD NAF program supports students on their path towards college or career. NAF academies are small learning communities within larger Dallas ISD schools. In addition to core academic courses, students take industry-specific classes and participate in work-based learning to get real world experience.
Dallas ISD opened the door to 18 collegiate academies in the fall of 2017. When the 2018–2019 school year ends, nearly 6,000 Dallas ISD high school students will go into the summer having earned college credit hours. These students are enrolled in one of the 23 early college high schools (ECHS) operated by Dallas ISD and the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD), where students can earn up to 60 hours of college or an associate degree while still in high school. With a strong showing in math events, Science and Engineering students lead in the overall championship points at the Conference 6A Region 1 UIL Academic Competition that was held at the University of Texas at Arlington on April 12-13. At the competition, Pranay Varada qualified to compete at the UIL Academic State Meet in three events by placing first in Calculator Applications; second in Number Sense; and first in Spelling and Vocabulary. “Recycling helps save the earth,” says Matthew Rangel. Rangel is a first-grade student at L. O. Donald Elementary School who, along with his peers from that grade, participates in the first-grade leadership academy with a focus in recycling. Students recycle everything from their school cafeteria food trays to water bottles from home, which they utilize in their class curriculum. “We measure our growth with water bottles,” said student Froilan Herrara.
