Senior classmates Valeria Delacruz and Vanessa Guel Guerrero are heading down different paths after they graduate from Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School , but they share a mutual admiration for each other’s journey. An eighth-grader at Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School won a nationwide essay contest on the Civil War. Dallas ISD and the Social Studies Department asked different campuses to enter the essay contest sponsored by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. For winning the essay contest, Eliane Spalding earned $300 and a trip to New York along with her parents and teacher Kenneth Aronhalt for the Lincoln Prize Dinner on April 17. Hundreds of families showed up to Billy Earl Dade Middle School on a Saturday to learn about the many enrichment activities offered over the summer. To help prevent summer learning loss, Dallas ISD is partnering with the City of Dallas, libraries and nonprofits to offer hundreds of summer programs and enrichment opportunities for students of all ages. Gilbert Cuellar, Sr. Elementary School teacher Ruth Torres has been selected for the prestigious LiftOff Summer Institute to be held at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston this summer. This nationally competitive program sponsored by NASA’s Texas Space Grant Consortium selects teachers who will increase their knowledge of science, technology, engineering, and math through space education. Liftoff 2019’s theme is The Legacy of Apollo. The workshops provide teachers the opportunity to spend a week working with professional scientists and engineers at the cutting edge of space exploration. A Dallas ISD middle school that has embraced Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) practices has seen its culture and climate improve by 40 percent since last school year, according to a climate survey completed by staff. Meanwhile, the climate and culture survey at E.D. Walker Middle School also shown a 40-percent increase in students’ good behavior as perceived by the staff. Discipline referrals have decreased thanks to the high expectations and SEL practices. More than 200 students at Frederick Douglass Elementary School were deputized as Junior Fire Marshals and got a hands-on fire safety lesson exploring a mobile fire simulation house. Texas Rangers baseball legend Michael Young joined The Hartford and the Dallas Fire-Rescue to help educate children about the importance of fire safety. Dallas ISD Reading Language Arts and Library Media Services–in partnership with Bouchercon, World Mystery Convention–is hosting the “It’s a Mystery” Writing Contest. The purpose of this contest is to recognize the talent of Dallas ISD students in grades 6–11 by spotlighting their creativity. The top three winners from each grade section (6th/7th, 8th/9th, and 10th/11th) will receive cash prizes, as well as recognition at the Bouchercon literary gala on Oct. 30.
