The Dallas ISD Board of Trustees gave the administration the green light to hire a search firm to help find top candidates for the district’s hard-to-staff positions. The board approved the proposal in a 6-3 vote during its regularly scheduled monthly meeting on August 28. Under the proposal, the district can allocate up to $300,000 during the next three years for these services. Additionally, the board voted to accept a grant increase (up to $50,000) for the Gates Next Gen Systems Initiative, Phase II. On Aug. 28, state District Judge John Dietz ruled that the current Texas school funding system does not suitably, adequately or equitably provide the resources necessary to give all students a genuine opportunity to meet the state’s rising expectations. The ruling is significant for the Dallas Independent School District and other ISDs because it supports the belief that the state has significantly raised academic standards but its funding commitment does not match its expectations. Dallas ISD is deeply saddened by the situation that occurred today at Woodrow Wilson High School. This afternoon, responding medical authorities determined that a human fetus had been found in a girls restroom at the school. The Dallas Police Department, assisted by Dallas ISD Police, is handling the investigation. Dallas ISD immediately dispatched staff from the district’s Psychological Services Department to the school to provide professional support for students and staff members. Two vehicle-related incidents this week near Dallas ISD campuses are a reminder to students and adults to be safe when traveling near schools. A crossing guard at Victor H. Hexter Elementary School was struck by a vehicle while on the job on Aug. 27 near Brookhurst Drive and NorthCliff Drive. No students were present at the time of the accident, but the crossing guard was significantly injured. Dallas ISD’s new evaluation system requires principals and assistant principals to be certified before officially evaluating teachers. In the month prior to the start of school, the District provided training to 648 principals and assistant principals on how to evaluate teachers under the new evaluation system known as the Teacher Excellence Initiative (TEI). The rigorous TEI evaluator training includes three parts – system knowledge, rater accuracy and field experience. More than 30,000 students were safely transported to Dallas ISD schools the first day of school, roughly the size of the entire population of the city of Waxahachie. The students were transported by bus or multi-passenger vehicle on one of 664 routes crossing the city. “Transporting more than 30,000 students on the first day of school is a real challenge,” said Dallas ISD Chief of Operations Wanda Paul. “While there will always be some transportation issues on the first day, we made much improvement over last year.
