Graduating Dallas ISD student-athlete seniors who have committed to scholarship offers to play sports and study at colleges and universities will get their moment to shine at the Athletic Signing Day event on Feb. 1, 11 a.m. at Ellis Davis Field House. The event will kick off with a Legacy Walk comprised of Dallas ISD graduates who played sports in college. Representing District 8, Miguel Solis became the youngest board member ever elected to the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees on November 5, 2013 through special election. Soon after, he was re-elected to serve a three-year term. On June 26, 2014, Solis was selected by his fellow Trustees as the Board President, making him the youngest ever to serve in the position. Dallas ISD third- and fifth-graders recently got the chance to attend an annual Dallas Winds concert specifically for them at the Music Hall at Fair Park. The Dallas Winds Experience is designed to encourage the students to love the music and eventually make some of their own. “The whole idea is to give them a wonderful entertaining performance and encourage them to join the band when they get in sixth grade,” said Kim Campell, director of Dallas Winds. A group of volunteers helped improve the Bayles Elementary School Garden on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and KERA News has the full story. The Americorps volunteers expanded the garden and replanted some cool weather vegetables such as beets, carrots, cabbage and some cilantro.
