A commentary by Rossi Walter, a member of the schools committee of the Harvard Club of Dallas, was recently published in The Dallas Morning News. Walter explores why Harvard University has accepted a record number of Dallas ISD graduating seniors the past two years. The Ivy League university accepted three students from the School of Science and Engineering, two from the School for the Talented and Gifted and one from Woodrow Wilson High School. The United States Navy Recruiting Command City Outreach Program had their 2017 Dallas Area Regional SeaPerch Underwater Robotics Challenge at Alfred J. Loos Natatorium. Competing with other school districts, Dallas ISD students built their own underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Though this project, students learn engineering concepts, problem solving, teamwork, and technical applications. Students build the ROV from a kit comprised of low-cost, easily accessible parts, following a curriculum that teaches basic engineering and science concepts with a marine engineering theme.

Hundreds of families got a firsthand look at what the Dallas ISD schools in Southeast Dallas have to offer on Saturday, April 8. The Discover Dallas ISD-Southeast Dallas event brought together representatives from the schools in the H. Grady Spruce, W.W. Samuell and Seagoville high school feeder patterns. Recognized for their work in Computer Science Education, the Dallas ISD STEM Department has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the DFW Alliance of Technology and Women (DFW*ATW) through their GREATMINDS program (Girls Reaching for Education About Technology and Moving in New Directions for Success)! This generous grant will be used to provide training and stipends for the sponsors of after school coding clubs at ten elementary campuses. The clubs will meet once a week for 10 weeks this spring. Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced that Dallas ISD is the latest local government entity to achieve specific transparency goals through the Comptroller’s Transparency Stars program. Dallas ISD received a star in the area of Traditional Finances, which recognizes entities for their outstanding efforts in making their spending and revenue information available. Members of Dallas ISD’s early learning team, staff, and volunteers took to the streets on Friday, March 31, to let people know in person about available pre-K opportunities in the district. The teams went door-to-door in Dallas neighborhoods to tell residents about the critical importance of high quality pre-K, and how a parent could register their 3- or 4-year-old. Dallas ISD offers pre-K for free to qualifying families. The district also offers paid pre-K this year families that don’t meet certain eligibility requirements. Five students at Carter High School have received full-ride scholarships to attend Texas Christian University. The five seniors were awarded the TCU Community Scholarships, each valued at more than $250,000, at a ceremony on Thursday. Two of the recipients, Nahjae and Tahjae Selby, are twin sisters. The other recipients are Deanna Harper, Rickey Perry and Patricia Smith. Each of the recipients had a chance to say a few words of thanks, and most broke down in happy tears.
