National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is April 9-15, and it’s an opportunity to celebrate those employees who help keep Dallas ISD safe! The Dallas ISD Police Department has 10 authorized police telecommunicators and one communications manager. These telecommunicators provide 24/7/365 coverage. They are responsible for answering all emergency and non-emergency calls from the Dallas ISD campuses, monitor intrusion and fire alarms, provide dispatch functions for all police personnel, as well as after-hours maintenance. They are licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. “These employees do an incredible job and deserve our recognition and praise,” Dallas ISD Police Sergeant Keith Clicque said.

Dallas ISD is simplifying the process for how students can transfer to other district schools. Superintendent Michael Hinojosa said at Thursday’s board meeting that simplifying the student transfer process will help more families find their best fit Dallas ISD school. Students will now be able to transfer schools for any reason, whereas, before, they had to have a curriculum- or hardship-related reason. Also, students who have been approved for transfer into a school will no longer have to reapply every year to attend that school, as long as there are still available spots at the campus. Nearly 80 visually impaired students from 42 Dallas Independent School District (Dallas ISD) campuses participated in a special Easter egg hunt on April 13 just for them. The event, which was coordinated by the Dallas ISD Special Education Vision Department and AT&T, used special eggs that emitted beeps to allow visually impaired students to find them more easily. In addition to the beeping egg hunt, enjoyed dying easter eggs, cookie decorating, and more. When the NCAA Women’s Final Four came to Dallas last month, Robert T. Hill Middle School seventh-grader Maria Gonzales got a piece of the spotlight as the basketball tournament’s “junior journalist.” She conducted on-camera interviews with former players and coaches and reported on the Tourney Town fan festival and the 3-on-3 alumni tournament. Marking a transition from a traditional co-ed middle school to an all-girls STEAM academy, today district officials, elected representatives and parents joined with the staff and students of the Young Women’s STEAM Academy at Balch Springs for a naming ceremony. In a program attended by Balch Springs’ current and former mayors and members of the Balch Springs City Council, speakers congratulated the school on its progress since opening last August to serve girls in grades six through eight. Eight Dallas ISD schools are advancing to the Destination Imagination Global Finals being held May 24–27 in Knoxville, Tenn! The teams advanced out of the State Destination Imagination Tournament held April 8 in Lubbock. Destination Imagination is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, courage and curiosity through open-ended academic challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts and service learning. Conrad High School’s Jorge Bahena, Trishna Biswa and Karla Bocanegra won Saturday’s Cooking Up Change competition with their Crispy Chicken Tender Wrap, Sassy Italian Corn and Banana Delight menu.
