The Adamson Scholarship Foundation awarded 14 graduating seniors from W.H. Adamson High School with $43,000 in scholarships at the school’s annual senior assembly on May 23. Adamson Scholarship Foundation Board Member Colleen Kelley handed out the awards that are for four years and range from $2,500 to $6,000 per year.  Students will receive the awards each year as long as they are enrolled full-time in higher education and meet grade requirements. Since its inception in 1947, the Adamson Scholarship Foundation has awarded $1.6 million in scholarships to more than 1,200 graduating seniors.

Achieve3000 has selected F.P. Caillet Elementary School as a “National Literacy Achievement” winner! This award is based on the exemplary implementation of the Achieve3000 program as well as exceptional literacy growth on campus. Additionally, fifth-graders Jonathan Ochoa Lazo and Jordan Powell were presented with the award for highest lexile reading level gains during the 2016-17 school year.

Volunteers who helped tutor Dallas ISD students via a computer throughout the school year met with the students face-to-face at end-of-year celebrations across the district. TutorMate is an online tutoring program that connects volunteers with first-grade students learning to read. The school’s mission is to provide students the tools they need to be leaders and overcome future challenges. The Dual Language Scholar Award was given to Rosemont International Language Preparatory School students who completed the Secondary Dual Language Program at a special ceremony on June 1. The students were recognized for completing rigorous academic courses in both English and Spanish for three consecutive years. They now have the opportunity to continue the Dual Language Program in high school. A student at Dallas ISD’s School of Science and Engineering (SEM) is offering a free three-day computer science workshop for girls in grades 6-8. Saumya Rawat’s “IT Empowerment for Her” workshop is designed to introduce middle school girls from historically underrepresented areas to the profession. Participants will learn how to use MIT App Inventor, meet student and professional mentors and learn about STEM careers. The program is scheduled for 10 a.m.-3 p.m. July 25-27 at the University of Texas at Dallas and would like to draw at least 40 participants. Thanks to employee donations and strong corporate and educational partnerships, the Stars on the Rise scholarship program raised $2.39 million to distribute to deserving area high school graduates. Rick Ortiz, president/CEO of the Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GDHCC), said that in the 34 years of the program, 4,100 students have benefited from $34.5 million in scholarships. “Most of the scholars come from here.
