A special ceremony celebrated more than 450 Dallas ISD seniors who completed a NAF Academy. The Dallas ISD NAF program supports students on their path towards college or career. NAF academies are small learning communities within larger Dallas ISD schools. In addition to core academic courses, students take industry-specific classes and participate in work-based learning to get real world experience.

Dallas ISD opened the door to 18 collegiate academies in the fall of 2017. When the 2018–2019 school year ends, nearly 6,000 Dallas ISD high school students will go into the summer having earned college credit hours. These students are enrolled in one of the 23 early college high schools (ECHS) operated by Dallas ISD and the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD), where students can earn up to 60 hours of college or an associate degree while still in high school. With a strong showing in math events, Science and Engineering students lead in the overall championship points at the Conference 6A Region 1 UIL Academic Competition that was held at the University of Texas at Arlington on April 12-13. At the competition, Pranay Varada qualified to compete at the UIL Academic State Meet in three events by placing first in Calculator Applications; second in Number Sense; and first in Spelling and Vocabulary. “Recycling helps save the earth,” says Matthew Rangel. Rangel is a first-grade student at L. O. Donald Elementary School who, along with his peers from that grade, participates in the first-grade leadership academy with a focus in recycling. Students recycle everything from their school cafeteria food trays to water bottles from home, which they utilize in their class curriculum. “We measure our growth with water bottles,” said student Froilan Herrara. Un grupo de estudiantes de Sunset High School han recibido una invitación para visitar Washington D.C. el próximo mes para presentar una aplicación que crearon a congresistas y la comunidad del campo de la tecnología. En 2018, más de 220 miembros de la Cámara de Representantes de Estados Unidos extendieron un reto en 47 estados y territorios para el desarrollo de aplicaciones denominado “Congressional App Challenge”. Barbara Brown McCoy is considered a trailblazer in Dallas ISD athletics for her accomplishments as a student-athlete, head coach and administrator at South Oak Cliff High School. Brown McCoy was one of the first beneficiaries of the recently passed Title IX legislation in 1972 as she honed her skills at Zumwalt Junior High before moving over to SOC in 1974. It didn’t take long for Brown McCoy to display her athletic prowess as she excelled in track & field, volleyball and basketball. John Pritchett is synonymous with Dallas ISD athletics, as his tenure spans 50-plus years announcing athletic events in the district and 30-plus years as an announcer for the UIL State Track & Field Meet. Born in Oklahoma and a graduate of W.H. Adamson High School, Pritchett took advantage of a late growth spurt while enlisted in the U.S. Army and was a three-sport letterwinner for his division team. His interest in broadcasting also took flight during that span as he served as the weekend announcer for the Frankfurt Black Knights’ football and basketball teams.
