Students at 12 Dallas ISD secondary schools may have the opportunity to make continuous academic improvement with the help of a $7.4 million Gates Foundation grant awarded to the Institute for Learning (IFL), an outreach of the University of Pittsburgh’s Learning Research and Development Center. On Friday, Aug. 24, students from seven Dallas ISD elementary schools celebrated a donation of uniforms to their schools by Pat and Emmitt Smith Charities and JCPenney with a pep rally-style event at Ellis Davis Field House. John Quincy Adams, James Bowie, J.N. Ervin, Tom Field, Martin Luther King Jr., Umphrey Lee and Herbert Marcus elementary schools are among campuses that together received a total of 3,000 donated uniforms valued at $150,000. Jiv Daya has donated kindles to grades 3–5 in six feeder patterns! At Camp Kindle, several teachers from each network learned how to best use kindles as a learning tool. The Dallas ISD Board of Trustees, district leadership and community members gave a standing ovation to the 13 Dallas ISD schools that diligently worked to improve student performance last school year and, as a result, are no longer on the list of the state’s lowest-performing schools. Dallas ISD is now accepting nominations for students in first- through fifth-grade to be screened for the Dallas ISD Gifted and Talented Education Program. The nomination window is open Aug. 27–Sept. 7. Parents, guardians and community members may nominate students for consideration. Students may also nominate themselves. Information packets are available at local campuses from the school’s Gifted and Talented Education Program teacher. Students must be enrolled in Dallas ISD to be tested. The Dallas ISD Board of Trustees on Aug. 23 unanimously approved up to $33.3 million in salary increases for eligible teachers, campus leaders and non-instructional staff. The district is able to fund the salary increases after receiving higher-than-expected revenue from property taxes.
