The end-of-year ACE reception honored outstanding assistant principals and coaches who have redefined what it means to be a leader in education. Dallas ISD Librarian of the Year Heather Hornor has one main goal at Skyline High School: ensure students know where the library is and how it can help them. Hornor has spent the past 18 years working in education, with the past seven of those as the Skyline librarian. North Dallas High School valedictorian Elizabeth Tan was only 13 when Child Protective Services escorted her away from the frightening environment she called home. Tan recalls packing everything she had into a single suitcase and moving into a women’s shelter with her mother and sister. “It was really chaotic. It was the final year before going off into high school, and suddenly everything changed,” Tan said. Outstanding elementary school robotics team, fantastic partners and Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings got shoutouts from the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees at the May 23 meeting. The fourth annual “Power Brokers: A Celebration of Women” created an inspirational experience for female juniors from South Oak Cliff High School to engage with powerful women who are making a difference in their community. More than 100 Dallas ISD students from four high schools gathered at the 2019 Dallas ISD Racial Equity Teen Summit hosted by the Dallas ISD Racial Equity Office and Young Leaders Strong City, a racial justice leadership development program for high school students.
