Sunset High School is launching a new Criminal Justice Academy in partnership with the Dallas Police Department (DPD). Upon successful completion of the program, Sunset Law Academy graduates will meet all the educational qualifications to apply for a police officer position in DPD. Sunset becomes the latest Dallas ISD school to formalize a law program towards an associate degree with law enforcement training. David W. Carter and Bryan Adams high schools already collaborate with DPD to produce police officers who can serve Dallas communities. Two of 11 finalists have been named Dallas ISD 2019-2020 Teachers of the Year! Eric Hale from David G. Burnet Elementary School is the Elementary Teacher of the Year and Katie Benningfield from the School for the Talented and Gifted in Pleasant Grove is the Secondary Teacher of the Year. Trustee Karla Garcia is a proud native of Southeast Dallas and a product of Dallas ISD schools. Garcia was inspired to run for Dallas ISD District 4 trustee because she wanted to address the inequities that she saw in the public school system, particularly in Southeast Dallas. Martinez is a tenacious senior at Innovation, Design, Entrepreneurship Academy who first learned about tenacity on his eleventh birthday when he was diagnosed with Stargardt, an eye disorder that causes vision loss. An inspiring speech from fifth-grader Colin Harris earned him first place in the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Oratory Competition. Harris, who attends J.P. Starks Math, Science and Technology Vanguard, competed alongside seven other outstanding fourth- and fifth-grade students at the Jan. 17 competition.
