All qualifying employees who are not part of a district excellence initiative will see board-approved salary increases reflected in their September paychecks. Those whose salaries are determined through one of the excellence initiatives— most teachers, assistant principals, principals and executive directors of schools—will see salary increases, if eligible, reflected in their October paychecks. Fifteen Dallas ISD students have been named among the 16,000 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists, with a chance to become one of the 7,600 finalists who will take home scholarships worth a combined $31 million. More than 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to reach the finals, with about half of the finalists earning a National Merit Scholarship. F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C! Dallas ISD’s first-ever Middle School Cheer Camp saw more than 100 students from 10 middle schools show their spirit on Saturday, Sept. 7. In addition to learning stunts, cheers and pyramid training, the students gained confidence, leadership skills and team bonding. The Dallas ISD, Family & Community Engagement Office is hosting a Saturday Fam Jam event for all Dallas ISD families in the Conrad, Hillcrest, W.T. White, and Thomas Jefferson high school feeder patterns. The Fam Jam is happening 8 a.m.–12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Conrad High School. The Dallas National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has selected Dallas ISD Board of Trustees President Justin Henry to receive the Juanita Craft Award, one of its highest honors. “You have been a standard bearer in making sure that every citizen, especially minorities, have the same opportunities to experience their American Dream,” Dallas NAACP President Aubrey Hooper wrote in a letter to Henry. Tres integrantes del equipo de liderazgo de Harambee entregaron las mochilas a los alumnos el pasado viernes. Gifted and talented (G/T) enrichment is designed to close the identification gap for elementary students through the implementation of deductive, convergent, divergent, evaluative, and analytical thinking lessons. Kindergarten classroom teachers work in collaboration with G/T teachers to provide 30-minute lessons once a week to enhance critical thinking skills and identify G/T characteristics.  The curriculum supports a differentiated approach to general education, integrates flexibly into any existing primary curriculum, and offers opportunities for learners with different strengths to shine.
