The Dallas ISD Food and Child Nutrition Services is rolling out four new delicious food items this year! “Menus are created with input from students taste-testing at multiple events over the school year,” said Betsy Wooldridge, Dallas ISD Menu Planning Supervisor. “We also look at the results from our Food Festivals and see what other districts around the country are serving and see what’s popular among the students. Dallas ISD is growing a program that prepares all students for college, careers and life. Facilitated through Dallas ISD Advanced Academic Services, 11 new campuses have received an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) one-time grant, which covers membership, digital curriculum, and AVID weekly supplemental resources. By adding these 11 campuses, AVID now serves 51 Dallas ISD schools. The scholarships help campuses promote leadership and collaborative efforts for both students and staff through professional learning and awareness. On the way to her afternoon class, junior Kendell Cole asks South Oak Cliff High School Principal Willie Johnson what she needs to join the swim team. Cole transferred from Crandall High School to SOC, and she is interested in bringing her significant swimming skills to the Golden Bears. Cole is one of more than 200 additional new students to start at SOC this year, which has seen its enrollment climb from 1,096 last school year to 1,322 this month. A local attorney donated $50,000 to build a food pantry at Esperanza “Hope” Medrano Elementary School on Friday. The Tracy Law Firm focuses on vehicle crashworthiness lawsuits. Its offices are near the Dallas Medical District, only two blocks away from Medrano. Todd Tracy, the head attorney, wanted to do something for young residents of this neighborhood.
