Dallas ISD received the 2020 NRG Excellence in Energy Efficiency Award. The district was selected from public and private entities statewide to receive the award for its “continual process to reduce costs by reducing energy consumption,” and by being the largest urban school district in the nation with renewable energy. A national leader in Dual Language instruction, Dallas ISD proudly serves as one of the largest programs in the nation, with instruction offered at 145 schools. Dallas ISD students can begin their journey to becoming bilingual and biliterate in prekindergarten and can remain in the program through high school. In a move to add an extra level of protection from COVID-19 for students and staff during the pandemic, Dallas ISD has joined a rapid testing antigen pilot program offered to districts by Governor Greg Abbott with TEA and the Texas Division of Emergency Management. The BinaxNOW Rapid Testing Pilot Program is providing the district with fast-acting test kits that allow individuals to take their own nasal samples that can show results in 15 minutes when mixed with a chemical reagent. As part of its annual STEM Virtual Expo, which will take place on Jan. 23, 2021, Dallas ISD has partnered with Dimension U, an esports for education company, to organize the virtual 2021 Math Olympiad Esports STEM Tournament. This platform is a curriculum-based, multiplayer video game where students in grades three through nine compete with others in one of three game worlds by solving math questions correctly. More than 250 cheerleaders from 13 high schools came out to Ellis Davis Field House on a cold Saturday morning to compete in the Dallas ISD Cheer Challenge. Hosted by the Student Activities Department, the Third Annual Cheer Challenge mimicked the UIL Spirit State Championship Finals. The Cheer Challenge followed the Cheer Showdown hosted in November. Together, these events gave the cheer teams exposure to fast-paced cheer competitions, and constructive critiques and feedback to improve their performances.
