Dallas ISD’s application period for students who wish to attend a magnet or other choice school or specialty program in 2021-2022 is now open! A district priority is to increase enrollment of Black and English Language Learner students in magnet and choice school programs. During last night’s board meeting, Dallas ISD honored volunteers and partners, considered the most outstanding of the year, for a broad range of service and donations to schools and the district in the 2019-2020 school year. The traditional in-person awards program was postponed last May due to the COVID-19 crisis. The Succeeding Together Industry Partner Award winner went to the Dallas office of Accenture, a multinational professional services company. The award recognizes Accenture for outstanding service to Dallas ISD’s collegiate academies, including support to the staff and students of Seagoville P-TECH. Twenty-one Dallas ISD neighborhood schools each received $50,000 in seed money to pursue innovative ideas that will increase school choice in families’ backyards. The Dallas ISD Office of Transformation and Innovation launched the Innovation Engine Grant program in 2019 as a way to further support neighborhood schools and increase school choice. Recently, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, hundreds of pounds of food and hygiene products were picked up by schools to distribute among the almost 4,000 Dallas ISD students who are considered to be homeless. The Dallas Mavericks and Mavs Foundation donated over $1M in personal protective equipment (PPE) for frontline workers serving those affected by COVID-19 as well as students, teachers and staff within the Dallas Independent School District. With the alarming surge in COVID-19 cases across N. Texas, the organization wants to do its part to slow the spread and strengthen the DFW community. As part of the Back to School support, the Mavericks donated $1,000,000 in Personal Protective Equipment to Dallas ISD. Today, The Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries announced that the Dallas Education Foundation is being awarded $500,000 for the direct benefit of Dallas ISD as it continues rebuilding from the October 2019 North Dallas tornadoes. Thomas Jefferson High School, Francisco “Pancho” Medrano Middle School, and Walnut Hill PK-8 will use the grants to expand, update, and diversify their library book collections.    “The tornadoes last fall destroyed parts of the Dallas community, including some of the schools our children attend.
