The AlumNow series showcases former students’ post-graduation successes.

We recently caught up with Melva Yanes, who is now a finance manager for Excelencia in Education. Read about her educational journey at Dallas ISD and how her teachers impacted her to give back to his community.

What high school did you attend and graduate from?

Trinidad Garza Early College High School in 2017.

What is your current occupation?

Finance Manager for Excelencia in Education.

What are your responsibilities?

As the finance manager, my daily responsibilities include managing invoicing, accounts receivable, and accounts payable, as well as financial reporting and responding to affiliate inquiries.

What made your Dallas ISD education unique?

As a first-generation high school and college graduate, my Dallas ISD education was unique because of the tremendous support I received from my teachers. They guided me through opportunities I may have not known about and helped me navigate the path to higher education.

Their encouragement motivated me to work hard and make the most of every opportunity available to me. Because of their support and mentorship, I was able to maximize my education, which is reflected in the accomplishments I have achieved so far.

Who was your favorite Dallas ISD teacher or what was your favorite course? and why?

My favorite teacher was Ms. Arevalo, who was known by many students as Coach Arevalo and has since retired. She made a significant impact on my education by constantly encouraging and motivating her students like myself to work hard and believe in themselves. She not only supported me academically but also inspired me to continue striving for success throughout my college education. There are not many teachers like her who generously share their wisdom and invest so deeply in their students. I am truly grateful to have had such an amazing teacher and coach during my educational journey.

What advice, if any, would you offer to students who are interested in your career field?

My advice to students interested in a career in accounting is to stay open-minded and be willing to explore different opportunities. An accounting degree can open many doors in a variety of fields. While many people think of accounting only in corporate settings, there are also meaningful opportunities in nonprofit organizations and other industries. Being open to different paths can help you discover where your skills and interests can make the greatest impact.
