Student survey results show district’s SEL focus is paying off

A survey of about 60,000 Dallas ISD students in grades 3–12 shows promising results that the district’s comprehensive efforts to focus on social and emotional learning is paying off.

In three out of four categories, district students report having a more positive view than the average national student in areas such as social awareness and supportive relationships.

Dallas ISD adopted an SEL policy in 2016. From respect agreements and weekly lessons to family engagement, SEL practices are built into instruction throughout the day. The district prioritized SEL during the pandemic for both at-home and on-campus learners.

“We know that our students and families are dealing with a lot during this pandemic, and we want them to have the resources and support they need to thrive,” Dallas ISD Executive Director Juany Valdespino-Gaytán said.

Data from the student survey and other metrics help the district provide targeted support, small group counseling and interventions for those who need it the most, according Valdespino-Gaytán. The SEL Department is also focusing on increased efforts–such as weekly coaching and support–for the schools with the most needs, based on their local accountability system rating.

“Focusing on social and emotional learning helps us develop the whole child,” Valdespino-Gaytán said. “And that can lead to lifelong success.”
