Tuesday was no ordinary day for about 150 business and civic leaders from across the Metroplex, who got to spend the day with students on Dallas ISD’s 22nd annual “Principal for a Day.” From storytime to observing instruction and making morning announcements, this year’s honorary principals stepped into the shoes of campus administrators to further understand how they can help uplift students and ensure a quality public education for students.  The Principal for a Day partnership began in 1999 with about 100 participants; only one year was missed, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Head Coach Brandon “Bam” Harrison was named the Dallas Cowboys’ High School Coach of the Week at the place where it all started – his alma mater, Justin F. Kimball High School. This honor recognizes local coaches who are making an impact on their team, school and community. Harrison is no stranger to the game of football, having played throughout his high school and college career before being drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 1995. Several Dallas ISD schools will be polling sites for the Nov. 8 general midterm election. Because community members will be allowed to enter the schools to vote, the Board of Trustees approved establishing Nov. 8 as a professional development day for teachers and a student holiday. This measure will ensure the safety and wellbeing of students and staff while the campuses are open to the public for the election. Custodians will be at the schools on Election Day; however, teachers and other campus-based staff and Student Transportation staff will conduct assigned professional development.
