More than 100 Dallas ISD students from four high schools gathered at the 2019 Dallas ISD Racial Equity Teen Summit hosted by the Dallas ISD Racial Equity Office and Young Leaders Strong City, a racial justice leadership development program for high school students. Fourth-graders from Walnut Hill Elementary School traveled to Austin and San Antonio on a field trip to experience what they are learning in Texas History class. As part of the Education in Action Discover Field Trip, the students visited the Texas State Capitol, The Alamo, and The Witte Museum. It’s a Monday morning at Dan D. Rogers Elementary School, and screams of delight are coming from the school’s playground. Students are swinging as high as possible, while other classmates zoom down a slide. Thanks to a partnership with the Dallas Park and Recreation Department and Texas Trees Foundation, Rogers Elementary was one of five Dallas ISD schools located in a “park desert”–meaning there was no other park within a 10-minute walk– chosen to become a Cool School Community Park.
