North Dallas High School valedictorian Elizabeth Tan was only 13 when Child Protective Services escorted her away from the frightening environment she called home. Tan recalls packing everything she had into a single suitcase and moving into a women’s shelter with her mother and sister. “It was really chaotic. It was the final year before going off into high school, and suddenly everything changed,” Tan said. More than 100 Dallas ISD students from four high schools gathered at the 2019 Dallas ISD Racial Equity Teen Summit hosted by the Dallas ISD Racial Equity Office and Young Leaders Strong City, a racial justice leadership development program for high school students. Fourth-graders from Walnut Hill Elementary School traveled to Austin and San Antonio on a field trip to experience what they are learning in Texas History class. As part of the Education in Action Discover Field Trip, the students visited the Texas State Capitol, The Alamo, and The Witte Museum.
