Assigned to district schools and departments in dozens of capacities, these heroes and heroines bring to their positions in Dallas ISD the same devotion to service and duty they gave to our country. In his Veterans Day message, Superintendent Michael Hinojosa calls on district students and staff to honor these deserving Americans for their service to our nation and to the students of Dallas ISD.

Twenty-five Dallas ISD students advance as semifinalists in the 25th Annual Gardere Martin Luther King Jr. Oratory Competition as they spoke to the theme, “If Dr. King were alive today, what would he say about Muhammad Ali’s contribution to society?” Each of the students wrote original essays and competed at the campus level for the opportunity to represent their school in the districtwide competition. Students must be in fourth- or fifth-grade in order to compete and are judged on stage presence, delivery, content interpretation and memorization. Mock election at Guzick Elementary teaches crucial civics lessons (video)

Students at Dallas ISD’s Frank Guzick Elementary experienced the political process of voting during a presidential mock election at their school. Students from Pre-K through 5th grade voted for either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. “It is very important for our students to know their right to vote,” said Principal Adreana Davis. “It’s also important for our students to understand when selecting a candidate that they choose one who best represents them and their family and values.”

Dallas ISD joins collegiate academy partnership with SMU Guildhall, Dallas County Community College District

SMU Guildhall has joined a partnership with Dallas ISD and the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) to create new opportunities for students to earn free and transferable college credit before they graduate high school. As a Dallas ISD Collegiate Academy partner, SMU Guildhall will work with students enrolled in the Gaming Pathway at Dr. Emmett J. Conrad High School in Dallas’ Vickery Meadow neighborhood. The district launched eight collegiate academies, one of which is the first Pathways to Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) in the state of Texas, at the beginning of the 2016-17 school year.
