Principal Holly Wallace and Community Liaison Ruth Lara invited a few friends over for lunch on Tuesday, June 13. The response was a packed cafeteria at Dallas ISD’s Herbert Marcus Elementary School and a bunch of happy tummies. “I didn’t know what to expect,” Wallace said, surveying the brimming cafeteria. “It’s a good thing.” The occasion helped officially kick off the Healthy Summer Meals for Kids program, which features more than 200 district schools and other locations throughout the city offer free breakfast and/or lunch to youth ages 18 and under while school is out of session. It’s a Tuesday morning in June, and a group of young students are making their very own “Bubble Blasters,” complete with flashing lights, an enormous cardboard castle and “snowball” throwers. The Bubble Blaster is just one of the students’ creations from Camp Invention, a weeklong camp that reinforces STEM learning with fun hands-on activities. Trustee Dustin Marshall reelected to District 2 seat

Dustin Marshall won reelection to the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees in the runoff election held June 10. Marshall represents District 2, which covers North and Near East Dallas. Marshall ran against Lori Kirkpatrick in the runoff election. Neither candidate received at least 50 percent of the vote on May 6, which caused the June runoff election. While it’s a scenario nearly every teacher faces at one point or another, how disruptions are handled can either positively or negatively affect the student and the learning environment for the rest of the class.
