Superintendent Michael Hinojosa announced today that the district’s mask requirement will remain in effect until Martin Luther King Jr. Day, pending the current COVID case numbers remaining stable. Once the protocol is lifted, we will move to recommending masks be worn in schools and offices for the safety of students and staff.

Dallas ISD District 5 Trustee Maxie Johnson today announced the renaming of Oliver W. Holmes Humanities Communications Academy to the John Lewis Social Justice Academy at O.W. Holmes, in honor of the late congressman and civil rights activist. As WFAA reports, a brand new school building is also in the works. A peaceful march led by Trustee Johnson, Holmes Principal Sharron Evans Jackson, and principals from surrounding schools began at 9:30 a.m. and concluded with a 10 a.m. press conference at the school. Downtown schools site to be named Nolan Estes Plaza

At their November board meeting, Dallas ISD trustees voted to name the future site of multiple schools downtown in honor of esteemed educator Nolan Estes, who served as the district’s superintendent for 10 years. “We are going to build three new schools, and you will be able to go from pre-K through a doctorate degree and never leave downtown Dallas,” Superintendent Michael Hinojosa said, in discussing the future Nolan Estes Plaza. All Dallas ISD employees who return next school year will be eligible for a retention incentive

As Dallas ISD continues to recover from the challenges of the pandemic, the safety, well-being and retention of the district’s highly qualified staff is a priority. A retention incentive for all eligible staff will be implemented for the 2022-2023 school year. ESSER funds will be leveraged to fund the retention incentive. Staff who return for the 2022-2023 school year would be eligible to receive the retention incentive that could amount to as much as $3,500 for the year. The incentive would be included in employees’ paychecks in three installments. The first installment—$500— would be paid in September to welcome staff…
