Dallas ISD will observe Juneteenth on Monday, June 20, and district schools and offices will be closed. Juneteenth—which commemorates the announcement of the emancipation of slaves on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, following the Emancipation Proclamation that was issued two years earlier—became a federal and district holiday last year. Juneteenth has been a state holiday in Texas since 1980.

The Dallas ISD Board of Trustees today formally named Stephanie Elizalde as the district’s next superintendent. The vote followed a 21-day state-mandated waiting period after trustees named Elizalde as the lone finalist. Elizalde most recently served as the superintendent of the Austin Independent School District, serving more than 80,000 students and 12,000 employees. Prior to this role, Elizalde served as the chief of school leadership for Dallas ISD. A native Texan, Elizalde is a third-generation public school educator who has served students in various roles, including as teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and deputy chief.
