Sanders said her favorite part of the job is teaching the students how to take care of themselves and, sometimes, their family members. Sanders secured two DonorsChoose grants that allowed her to purchase material to teach students about healthy eating, as well as to buy basic hygiene products for students and their families. Kimball High School both recently received NAF Distinguished recognition for the 2016-2017 school year, one of only 32 high schools in the U.S. to achieve Distinguished status and one of only two in Texas. Dallas ISD competed in the 2017 UIL State Track and Field Championships and ran away with 28 medals. The Carter High School Girls Track and Field team is the 2017 4A State Champions, and the school’s Boys Track and Field team is the 2017 4A State Runner-Up. The district overall had 34 student-athletes compete in 20 events. Sha’Carri Richardson of Carter High School set the record last year for the 100-meter dash, and then broke that record this year. Four Dallas ISD students will attend the prestigious West Point Middle School STEM workshop in New York City later this month. The Center for Leadership and Diversity in STEM is hosting the workshop that is open to sixth- and seventh-graders who have demonstrated strong academic performance and an interest in pursuing college. Tatum Elementary teacher Carolyn Myers was driving to work when a car crashed into her, flipping her automobile on its side. Myers was trapped, thought she smelled smoke, and, as she puts it, “was totally freaked out.” After screaming for help, a man came to her rescue, climbing down into the car and steadily talking her through the situation—calming her down— until the ambulance arrived. “I truly believe this man saved my life,” Myers said. “I can not thank him enough.” The man turned out to be Sgt. Students and staff at Dallas ISD’s J.J. Rhoads Learning Center wrapped up the week on Friday, May 12, with a Career Day that had an outdoor component and also presenters in third- through fifth-grade classrooms. Outside, Dallas Police and Dallas Fire-Rescue brought vehicles for students to see and explore. Indoors, presenters from the U.S. Army, Dallas World Aquarium and many others talked about how they got into their careers and what it takes to be successful at their jobs.
