Pipeline to Possibilities, which helped educate students on various aspects of the justice system, concluded on May 18. Students from Kimball and South Oak Cliff high schools participated in the closing ceremony at Mountain View College. Various college representatives, Mountain View College President Dr. Robert Garza, entrepreneurs and more attended the event. The African American Success Initiative partnered with local Dallas county judges to create the program. Hillcrest High School graduating senior Lisbet Tudon Velazquez’s goal has been to make her parents, who immigrated to the United States almost 20 years ago, proud. Velazquez has balanced great grades, a job, playing lute in the school band—and much more—while in high school. She even attended a physics camp over the summer where she decided she wants to become an an engineer. Velazquez is set to study petroleum engineering in the fall at the University of Texas in Austin. Given all of Velazquez’s accomplishments, it’s no surprise that her parents are very proud.

Rodriguez recently returned from the Texas Library Association’s Bluebonnet Awards luncheon in San Antonio where he represented thousands of his peers across Texas and met best-selling children’s book author, Victoria Jamieson, winner of the library association’s 2017 Bluebonnet award. Robert T. Hill Middle School has been named a recipient of the 2017 Silver National Healthy Schools Award by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. According to the Alliance’s website, the award is an honor given to showcase and acknowledge schools that have implemented changes to create healthier school environments. To earn an award, schools must meet best-practice criteria established by the Alliance’s Healthy Schools Program Expert Panel and outlined in the Healthy Schools Program Framework of Best Practices. More than 500 ninth-graders from Dallas ISD’s Moisés E. Molina High School opened their own doors of opportunity by visiting Mountain View College. The students received mock schedules and attended college classes with professors from the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) who donated their time to help our students experience college life. Molina staff members escorted the ninth-graders in groups of 10 through their college day, attending classes, touring the college and being introduced to Leadership opportunities there.  Students also attended a one-hour session with Molina administrators where they learned about GPA, rank, reading a transcript and financial aid opportunities.…

Three nationally known children’s book authors visited Dallas ISD’s Thomas Tolbert Elementary School on Friday, May 19 – one of them possibly more notable for the eight years she lived in the White House. Former First Lady Laura Bush visited the school to announce the DFW-area winners of grants through the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries. Schools in Denton and Arlington are receiving grants in the latest round of awards. She also read the book, Our Great Big Backyard, co-written with her daughter Jenna Bush Hager. The Sunset High School robotics team won the 2017 UIL Robotics State Championships in Conference 5A-6A of the First Tech Challenge Division! The UIL Robotics State Championships were held May 19-20 at the Austin Convention Center. The Sunset team members are Karen Garcia, Valerie Alvarez, Maria Diaz, Jennifer Servilla, Samantha Morales, Ana Palomares, Ivan Martinez, Nick Moncada, Jesse Estudillo, Allan Cruz and Alexander Alonzo. C.F. Carr Elementary hosted its College and Career Week May 15–19 to encourage students to become lifelong learners. The weeklong theme this year was “An Education is the Ticket to Your Future.” The week started off with U.S. Congressman Marc Veasey talking to students and giving them an insight into how the government works. Veasey encouraged students to set goals that they want to achieve in life. There was a theme for each day and, on Wednesday, students wrote about what they dream of becoming and how they will plan to make that dream a reality. After attending the Dallas ISD daylong orientation for new substitute teachers, Cynthia McMillian, who has worked as a substitute all year at W.T. White High School, said she was ready to succeed in the classroom. Dallas ISD revamped its substitute teacher orientation this year to notably positive results.  The orientation partners with different Dallas ISD departments so incoming substitute teachers are informed on everything from de-escalation techniques to best teaching practices.
