On Dec. 10, nearly 100 volunteers from Appreciation Financial and National Life Group acted as “Santa’s elves” to revitalize Ben Milam Elementary School. Appreciation Financial worked closely with Dallas ISD, who suggested the in-need school. The school is housed in a building that’s more than 100 years old and contains a high concentration of economically disadvantaged students, which is why it was chosen as the beautification site. The school’s principal was also presented with a surprise $2,000 scholarship donation and an additional $500 donation to help a staff member in need. Dallas ISD students led a Nest Foundation forum Dec. 7 that prompted a conversation on finding ways to end child sexual exploitation and trafficking in Texas. The forum took place at SMU and was composed of policymakers and local experts, including an FBI Special Agent, Dallas County Judge, State Representative, Former Texas State District Judge and Journalism Professor. Students from Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School, Skyline High School and Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy led the conversation and facilitated questions for the panelists. Ben Milam Elementary student Bryan Gutierrez is going to Disney World after participating in the Oncor Mayor’s 5K Race. Milam Elementary was one of nine Dallas ISD schools selected to attend a breakfast with Mayor Mike Rawlings after the Oncor Mayor’s Race 5K on Saturday, Dec. 10. Schools were selected after applying for a Mayor’s Youth Fitness Initiative (MyFi) High-Five grant from the City of Dallas to support fitness initiatives for students and their families. Give a Kid a Coat, a partnership between Carla Harrell, owner of The Rhinestone Artist, and Sir Earl Toon, from the world renowned band Kool & the Gang, donated 1,160 coats, plus sweaters and hats, to homeless students in Dallas ISD over the weekend. Every year since 2012, Toon and Harrell has hosted their Give a Kid a Coat event before the holidays. This wonderful event was inspired by Harrell seeing a young girl walking to school in the cold without a coat on. The Dallas ISD Athletics Department, in conjunction with the Dallas Sports Commission, recently held a media conference to announce the 77th Annual Holiday Invitational, the district’s longstanding basketball tournament. The press conference provided details on the the 77th Annual Dallas ISD Holiday Invitational, formerly known as the Dallas ISD/Coca-Cola Basketball Tournament, that will see 64 high school boys and girls basketball teams play at eight Dallas ISD locations. The tournament will take place Dec. 28-30. Interior design firm Looney & Associates provided furniture, school supplies for teachers and staff and recess equipment to J.W. Ray Elementary School on Thursday, Dec. 8. In November, the group learned that the campus, like many district schools, needed a washer and dryer. Fifth-graders from Preston Hollow Elementary School got an up-close look at college thanks to a field trip to Texas A&M University in College Station. The field trip was part of the school’s effort to ensure every student is college and career ready. “We thought it would be a great idea to take our students to a dynamic college campus so that they could begin looking at their options for college and career,” said Rhiannon Vejar, a counselor at Preston Hollow Elementary. “The students had a great time and got a lot out of the visit.”

The city of Dallas is buzzing about a brand new school opening in the fall. After a rigorous proposal process, CityLab High School is set to launch in August of 2017 with 100 incoming ninth-graders. With its focus on urban planning, environmental science, and architecture, the school has found a natural home in the Pegasus Complex in Downtown Dallas. Here, students will be able to easily use the city as a lab to ground their learning and explore the diverse social fabric and neighborhoods of Dallas.
