A group of young entrepreneurs at Sunset High School has earned the campus a Gold Level Certification for their work operating and managing the school store. Sunset teacher Marcus Nickerson leads the DECA School Store class that researched and wrote a 37-page report on the school-based enterprise (SBE). The report details everything from the cash flow, profit/loss margin, inventory tracking and marketing plan for the business. Students in the class also operate the store through positions such as barista, financial clerk, store manager, and inventory specialist. Dallas ISD step teams are participating in Stomp Wars on Saturday, March 11 at College Park Center at UT-Arlington. The event, hosted by Rock-T from the Rickey Smiley Morning Show, is billed as the largest youth stepping competition in the country. District students and their parents can purchase discount tickets. After participating in four VEX IQ competitions, the two Winnetka Elementary School robotics teams have a combined total of 13 trophies: The Excellence Award, Team Work Champions, Skills Champion and the Inspire Award. The four Excellence Awards represent the highest honor given at the VEX IQ competitions. In order to receive it, both teams had to have a quality STEM project, and students presented their projects before a panel of judges. In addition, the teams must display an excellent engineering notebook, have good skills scores in driving and programming, and exhibit teamwork. Dallas ISD has identified the high-performing principals who will lead the district’s six new ACE schools next school year. The district launched the ACE program, which stands for Accelerating Campus Excellence, last school year at seven historically low-performing schools. The program helps boost student achievement by staffing the highest-need schools with high-performing principals and teachers. After just one year, six of those schools met state standards this year, and all seven campuses have shown significant improvement in student achievement. District trustees voted at their February board meeting to approve the 23 Phase 2 construction projects and architects recommended by the superintendent and bond program administrators. The Phase 2 project list includes schools located in every trustee district with construction costs estimated at a total $275 million. Strongly encouraging bond program staff to continue pursuing savings on architectural fees, trustees voted 7-2 to approve the recommended list of primary project architects. Trustees on Thursday approved the sale of 10 surplus Dallas ISD properties, including the district’s current headquarters at 3700 Ross Ave. The sale of the surplus properties will generate approximately $18 million in revenue for the district. Dallas ISD is consolidating its headquarters and other district offices into one building at 9400 N. Central Expressway. Trustees approved the purchase of the Central Expressway building in April 2016. The surplus properties were advertised for sale to the general public on Oct. 31, Nov. 7, and 14, 2016, with a bid closing date of Dec. 2, 2016.
