On National Signing Day, Dallas ISD recognized about 100 student-athletes who have committed to play sports and study at a college or university. Dan D. Rogers Elementary Principal Lisa Lovato, a Dallas ISD Principal of the Year, started her career in education as an ESL teacher. In her first year of teaching, Lovato was asked to be on the campus instructional team. The team inspired her to learn as much as she could and think on a global perspective. Frederick Douglass: Born a slave, Douglass was taught to read and write by a plantation owner before escaping slavery in 1838 en route to Massachusetts. He became a well-known orator on topics of anti-slavery. Douglass wrote an autobiography titled, “The Narrative for the Life of Frederick Douglass,” and, in the same year, departed to England for refuge where he found allies who later purchased his freedom. About 100 Dallas ISD student-athletes who are committing to study and play sports at colleges and universities after they graduate were honored at the district’s annual National Signing Day celebration on Wednesday, Feb. 1. The event puts the students, along with family members and their coaches, on the red carpet to encourage them in their decision to further their education after high school. The event happened on the first day students can put pen to paper when it comes to scholarship offers. Recognized for their work in Computer Science Education, the Dallas ISD STEM Department has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the University of Texas at Austin! This generous grant will provide continuing support for the CS4Dallas (Computer Science for Dallas)  initiative that ensures all students in grades K-12 receive computer science education.  Teachers will have the opportunity to receive computer science and robotics professional development from leaders in the field, such as the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy, Code.org, and Texas Tech University.

The Dallas ISD United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Workplace Campaign kicked off on Tuesday, Jan. 31. The campaign is an opportunity for district employees to donate to scholarships to help deserving Dallas ISD seniors of all races attend college. Dallas ISD campus employees can donate to the campaign by contacting their campus or department’s UNCF Representative. This year’s UNCF Workplace Campaign theme is Dollars for $cholars, and the goal this year is to raise $50,000. ¿Pueden deletrear I-M-P-R-E-S-I-O-N-A-N-T-E? Recientemente, cerca de 120 estudiantes de 70 escuelas de Dallas ISD participaron en seis concursos de deletreo en el distrito, y 18 de ellos se dirigen al concurso de deletreo del condado. Este año participaron más estudiantes en los concursos del distrito que el año pasado, cuando compitieron 95 estudiantes de 60 escuelas. El concurso del condado se realizará el 16 de febrero, y el ganador pasará al concurso de deletreo regional.
