Walk into T.W. Browne Middle School and you will notice a 5-foot-tall steel safe in the entry lobby. The safe might not have gold or money, but it’s still filled with valuables: letters that students wrote to themselves about their future goals. The safe also has some parent-written letters detailing their dreams for their child’s future. Similar safes are currently in 11 other Dallas ISD schools as part of the School Time-Capsule Project organized by Bill Betzen, a retired Dallas ISD teacher who now volunteers with the district. Former Dallas Cowboys players led students at Thelma Elizabeth Page Richardson Elementary School in a variety of physical activities and drills as a way to promote health and wellness. Charles Haley, Dixon Edwards, Tony Casillas and Rowdy, the Cowboys mascot, got the students active and smiling during their visit. The event was a part of National Football League’s Play 60 initiative that tackles childhood obesity and inspires kids to play well and eat better. The former Cowboys players visited Richardson Elementary because the school completed all of the components of the Play 60 program over the last year.
Fans and community members are invited to attend a fundraiser for the multi-time state championship basketball team at Justin F. Kimball High School. The fundraiser is from 12–4 p.m. at Southwest Center Mall, 3662 W. Camp Wisdom Road. Hundreds of high school students across Dallas ISD visited and participated in the district’s annual college fair on Sept. 21. A wide range of colleges and universities were on hand, along with important information on preparing for higher education. Transportation was provided to the event.
Dallas ISD this week hosted Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick’s State of Texas P-TECH Advisory Council during a conference at Seagoville High School. The workshops featured discussions on design, planning, implementation and partnership development for this initiative. The group selected by Lt. Governor Patrick is the first of its kind in Texas. Israel Cordero, deputy of School Leadership for Dallas ISD, welcomed nearly 50 participants and served as a panelist. The Dallas Regional Chamber welcomed business and civic leaders to downtown Dallas at the Sheraton Hotel for the district’s State of Public Education Address. Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Morath provided the keynote speech at the event. “We have to provide a system that is a common public education system that works for all of our young people,” Morath said. Next Tuesday, Sept. 27, is ACT School Day, an important day in the life of seniors in the class of 2017. On that day, at 9:30 a.m., all Dallas ISD high schools will administer the ACT Plus Writing tests to seniors during the regular school day. The district’s Postsecondary Success department has covered the cost of the in-school college entrance exam to help seniors meet college admission requirements. On Thursday, Sept. 22, people will open their hearts – and wallets – to thousands of worthy causes on North Texas Giving Day. One of those causes is a project for Dallas ISD pre-K students. The “Backpack for Books” program will serve 600 district pre-K classrooms by providing each two backpacks filled with reading materials that families can use to work with their children at home.
