The boys basketball teams at Madison, Lincoln and Skyline high schools are competing in the regional tournament later this week. The games with Dallas ISD teams scheduled for March 3 are: Madison High Schools v. Mount Vernon High School: 6 p.m. at Rockwall Heath High School Lincoln High School v. Paris High School: 8 p.m. at Texas A&M Commerce Skyline High School v. Dekaney High School: 8 p.m. at Ellis Davis Field House The winners of these games will play the following day. The Hub will post the results on these games.

Dr. Cynthia Wilson, chief of staff for the Dallas Independent School District, announced this week she has accepted a position to work in a similar role for Houston ISD. Pamela Lear has been appointed as Dallas ISD’s new chief of staff, effective April 1. Lear has served Dallas ISD in various leadership capacities since 2012 and began her career with the district as director of High School Redesign. Her experience in education spans nearly 30 years, when beginning as a teacher in southern California. Four campuses have advanced to the next round in the NCAA’s Read to the Final Four® contest for Dallas Independent School District third-graders. The bracket style tournament mimics the NCAA Final Four basketball tournament schedule, with schools advancing based on how many minutes students read outside school hours. Since November, third-graders from across the district have been counting the number of minutes they read each day. The Final Four advanced from the Elite 8 round. El año pasado el distrito lanzó el programa ACE, que significa Accelerating Campus Excellence, en siete escuelas con un rendimiento históricamente bajo. Por medio de los talleres PREP U, que se ofrecen durante la semana, el Dallas ISD les ofrece a las familias una serie de talleres para conocer más sobre las próximas evaluaciones estatales, State Assessments of Academic Readiness, mejor conocida como STAAR. Los talleres son interactivos y las familias tendrán la oportunidad de ver ejemplos de las preguntas en lectura, matemáticas y escritura, así como aprender sobre la puntuación necesaria para aprobar. Dallas ISD’s Office of Transformation and Innovation (OTI) today announced the brand new choice offerings identified through the Public School Choice 3.0 selection process. The chosen schools include one neighborhood school redesigning its academic model for all its students, one school piloting an innovative program, and one brand new middle school that will be open to all district students. A ribbon-cutting followed student choir, band and drama performances as staff, parents and students gathered for the naming ceremony for the Young Men’s Leadership Academy at Fred Florence Middle School, the district’s newest single-gender school for boys. Math Instructional Coach Derek Thomas opened the event and served as emcee, and Principal Dawn Walker welcomed district and city officials and community members. On Feb. 23, Robert T. Hill Middle School hosted the Nokia Careers and Coding Event. Career and Technical Education students from the school were introduced to computer programming and coding through an education program developed at MIT. Representatives from Nokia served as session leaders and instructors for the event. February is CTE month, an opportunity to celebrate the value of CTE programs.

Through its PREP U Weekday workshops, Dallas ISD will offer families a series of workshops to learn more about the upcoming administration of the State Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR. In the interactive workshops, families will be able to view sample questions in reading, math, and writing, as well as learn about the passing standards. District experts will be there to answer questions on how the STAAR impacts high school graduation requirements and other topics. A group of young entrepreneurs at Sunset High School has earned the campus a Gold Level Certification for their work operating and managing the school store. Sunset teacher Marcus Nickerson leads the DECA School Store class that researched and wrote a 37-page report on the school-based enterprise (SBE). The report details everything from the cash flow, profit/loss margin, inventory tracking and marketing plan for the business. Students in the class also operate the store through positions such as barista, financial clerk, store manager, and inventory specialist.
