Souper Bowl of Caring, a nonprofit dedicated to tackling hunger, kicked off its year-round initiative at Billy Earl Dade Middle School to help the more than 4 million Texans who face hunger. Teaming up with long-standing grocer partners, Albertsons, Kroger, Market Street and Tom Thumb, SBOC held its annual kick off at Dade Middle School on Thursday, Jan. 18. On Tuesday, Jan. 23, Mayor Mike Rawlings kicked off the 11th Dallas Mayor’s Intern Fellows Program by urging businesses and nonprofits to sign up to participate in the program. The eight-week paid summer internships are available to Dallas students, with the deadline to register coming fast on Jan. 31. After being honored at a special reception on Jan. 17, Dallas ISD’s 2017-2018 Teachers of the Year were visited in their classrooms the next day by representatives from Central Market. This year’s top teachers are Josue Tamarez Torres, a fifth-grade math teacher at Annie Webb Blanton Elementary School; Beth Poquette Drews, who teaches mariachi, orchestra and guitar for grades 6-8 at L.V. Stockard Middle School; and Nedra Johnson, who teaches science for grades 6-8 at Alex W. Spence Middle School. Seagoville Middle School students have a much better shot of staying healthy after Albertsons recently donated and administered more than 100 flu vaccines at the campus. “With the current flu epidemic, it’s great having one of our most dedicated partners, Albertsons, step up to the plate to offer protection to the students of Seagoville Middle School,” said Tom Hayden of the Dallas ISD Strategic Initiatives and External Relations Partnership Office. Four Dallas ISD schools advanced to the State Academic Decathlon Competition by earning top scores in their divisions at the Region XII competition held Jan. 19-20 at Seagoville High School. This is the first time that four Dallas ISD schools have advanced to the state competition. The School of Science and Engineering took first place in the large school division.
