Elrod’s Cost Plus, Post and P&G have teamed up once again to help deserving Dallas ISD students start the new school year off right. From July 19–Aug. 31, shoppers can visit any Dallas Elrod’s Cost Plus to donate at checkout to the Dallas ISD Field Trip Fund. The suggested donation is $1, but all donations will be accepted. The fundraiser aims to support as many field trips as possible for Dallas ISD students. Last year the fundraiser drive raised enough to support 15 Dallas ISD schools. Dallas ISD Assistant Athletic Director Annette Scogin is the Texas winner for the 2016-2017 Frank Kovaleski Professional Development Award. Scogin received the award at the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association’s (THSADA) Hall of Honor Banquet in Houston on July 23. Scogin earned the award by being a THSADA and National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association member who has made significant contributions and demonstrated excellence in professional development at the local, state and national levels.

A called board meeting to consider a special Tax Ratification Election for October has been postponed. The Administration postponed the meeting after receiving an estimate of $2.2 million for a special October election. Instead, the Administration will present options for the Board to consider calling a Tax Ratification Election or Tax Swap on November 7, the Uniform Election date. The cost of the November election is anticipated to be no more that $750,000. Sunset High School teacher Laura Page was selected as one of 53 participants for the 2017 National Gallery of Art Teacher Institute on Art of the Renaissance held in Washington, D.C., in July. The six-day seminar brought together teachers of art, English, history, math, and related subjects from 22 different states. The program emphasized the social and cultural context of Renaissance art in Italy and Northern European countries between the 14th and 16th centuries. Dallas ISD this week is hosting its annual weeklong AVID workshops that have been coined as “Brown Bag Trainings.” AVID, which stands for Advancement via Individual Determination, is a global organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and postsecondary opportunities.
