When Daniel enrolled in the L.G. Pinkston Collegiate Academy last year, he was not fully aware of how the experience would change his life. Today, he is a sophomore in the program and college is more than a dream; it is a reality. “What I like about this program is the opportunity to visit a number of colleges. The Dallas ISD Health and Physical Education Department has a new name to reflect its additional role to provide districtwide support for the physical, social and emotional well-being of students, families and staff. Now called the Urban School Wellness Department, it will continue to provide curriculum, assessment and professional development for health and physical education for grades K-12. The department has become responsible for supporting district compliance with many local, state and federal mandates related to the overall health and wellness of the school community. The Dallas Convention Center has been designated as the major shelter for the city. The students housed at this location will be provided transportation and enrolled in J.F. Kennedy Elementary, A.W. The concept behind Dallas ISD’s new CityLab High School drew 100 eager freshmen to class on Monday, where they met teachers and staff just as excited to open the new campus. In response to the challenges created by Hurricane Harvey, Dallas ISD is committed to serving any students from Houston and the surrounding areas. Students from the Houston area are expected to start enrolling in Dallas ISD schools. Dallas ISD campuses will immediately enroll these students who will be staying with family, friends, in shelters and hotels. Campus administrators will work with these families to secure uniforms. Each student in the Dallas Independent School District will receive school supplies, including a notebook, pencil and a Mavs Game voucher, from the Dallas Mavericks and owner Mark Cuban this fall. On Monday, Aug. 28, the first day of school for Dallas ISD, the Mavs ManiAACs, Dancers, Drumline, Champ and MavsMan distributed more than 6,000 school supplies to Skyline High School and Guzick Elementary School to celebrate the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year.
