U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist Laurie Hernandez visited students at John Pershing Elementary School to share with them her experience as an Olympic athlete. Hernandez also spent time reading books to students as a way of promoting a passion for literacy among the youth. The visit was part of the Family for Literacy campaign by KPMG. The goal of the campaign is to provide books to students at need to help them enhance their reading skills. As part of the campaign, 500 Pershing students each received. Hernandez was a member of the U.S. women’s gymnastics team at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Estudiantes de la escuela John Pershing Elementary School recibieron una agradable visita de la medallista olímpica, Laurie Hernández. Hernández compartió su experiencia como atleta olímpica, la cual la encaminó hacia el liderazgo. Hernández también pasó tiempo leyendo algunos libros a alumnos para fomentar su interés por la lectura. Esta visita fue parte de la campaña Family for Literacy, de KPMG, la cual se enfoca en que estudiantes tengan acceso a libros. Como parte de este programa, KPMG donó 500 libros a alumnos de Pershing Elementary School.

Los consejeros de Dallas ISD recibieron información sobre una propuesta para abrir tres nuevas escuelas de transformación en agosto siguiendo modelos de aprendizaje que han tenido éxito en otros campus. Las escuelas de transformación ofrecen programas académicos especializados, similares a las escuelas magnet, pero sin requisitos de ingreso académico. The deadline to apply for student transfers for the 2018-2019 school year is March 31. Since last year, students in Dallas ISD may apply for a transfer from their assigned school to another district school for any reason. Approvals are based on space being available for the grade level requested. In addition to current Dallas ISD students, those who live in another school district may apply to attend a Dallas ISD school – as long as space is available for their grade at their chosen campus. Two middle-school teams emerged from the sixth-grade Dallas ISD Futsal Tournament this month to earn a trip next summer to Disney World to compete against teams from across the globe. The sixth-graders participated in non-coed divisions. The winning boys team is from Stockard Middle School, led by Coach Brent Bleasdell. The winning girls team is from Spence Middle School and is led by Coach Scott Brothers. Both will compete in the United Scholastic Futsal World Championships in July in Orlando. The National Football Foundation (NFF) Gridiron Club of Dallas Chapter recognized 22 Dallas ISD scholar-athletes for their accomplishments during the chapter’s 10th Annual Awards Banquet on March 18. Selected from a pool of candidates that covers the entire region, high school players earned NFF chapter scholar-athlete recognition in 2018 after a rigorous review. The selection committee, comprised of coaches, teachers, administrators and business leaders from North Texas, evaluated the college and high school candidates based on their athletic accomplishments, academic performance and leadership in the community.
