Dallas ISD continues to show strong gains in academic achievement under the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) A to F accountability system. Overall, the district maintained a grade of B, increasing from an 81 to 86. When “TINA: The Tina Turner Musical” opens on Broadway in November, a familiar Dallas ISD face will be on stage performing as a young version of the musical legend. Skye Turner, a product of Charles Rice Learning Center, heads to New York City later this month to start rehearsals for the new musical. As part of the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas Stock the School event, presented by Mr. Cooper, volunteers visited Cedar Crest Elementary School Aug. 10 to collect and stock essential learning supplies and provide a facelift to the facilities. United Way volunteers stuffed dozens of classroom kits with much-needed supplies, including composition notebooks, folders, markers and pencils, before the first day of school on Aug. 19. In order to address the facility and technology needs of the district, Dallas ISD is in the planning process for a potential 2020 bond election. In June 2019, the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees approved a charter to establish a Citizens Bond Steering Committee (CBSC). The CBSC is structured so that several sub-committees will be formed to concentrate on specific needs within the district and provide recommendations to the CBSC. The committee will provide a final report and recommendation to the Board of Trustees in August 2020. For this reason, the district is seeking volunteers to serve on the sub-committees.…

Advanced Academic Services sponsored the first Dallas ISD Advanced Placement Summer Boot Camp on July 29. The AP Boot Camp provided support and resources to Dallas ISD students who are taking an AP course for the first time. Through the boot camp, students gained exposure to AP-level coursework and developed skills needed to complete an AP class successfully. Students were engaged in experiences that encouraged teamwork and fostered communication, organization, critical reading, writing, and problem-solving skills. As part of Girls Inc. Of Metropolitan Dallas, Dallas ISD middle and high schoolers joined other students to “use the force” at this year’s Capital One Coders Ignite program. During the day-long event, each student created a mobile Star Wars app with the MIT App Inventor. The students were all smiles from the start. With the help of Capital One mentors, they designed an app to move the Millennium Falcon spaceship and created an additional app of their own choosing.
