Dallas ISD’s Food and Child Nutrition Services Department will offer students free meals during the Thanksgiving break, from Nov. 25–Nov. 27, at select locations. The effort is to ensure students have access to nutritious meals even during breaks from school. Participating schools throughout the district will be serving morning snack from 9–9:30 a.m. and lunch from 12:30 p.m.–1 p.m. For a list of participating schools, go here. Thanksgiving Break Meals are free to all children and youth through age 18. Educational and enrichment activities will be available for all participants.

Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed Dallas ISD Trustee Edwin Flores to the Texas School Safety Center Board. Flores will join seven other appointees on the board that reports to the governor, legislature, State Board of Education and Texas Education Agency regarding school safety and security. The board also advises the center on its function, budget and strategic planning initiatives. In addition to serving as a Dallas ISD trustee, Flores is the managing partner at Chalker Flores, LLP and is a member of the State Bar of Texas and United States Patent and Trademark Office.

More than 100 parents attended the Nov. 16 Dallas ISD Fam Jam event at Spruce High School, NBC 5 reports. My ultimate goal is to go to medical school and become a cardiac surgeon or cardiologist, so I love getting a head start at the School of Health Professions. The Dallas ISD Language, Literacy, and Social Studies departments held their annual Fall Conference at Bryan Adams High School on Nov. 9. Nearly 300 teachers and staff came together under the theme of “Empowering Students through Disciplinary Literacy” and were treated to keynote speeches from Chief Academic Officer Ivonne Durant and global literacy expert Pam Allyn. Students from six schools got to see the new movie “Harriet,” which tells the story of heroic abolitionist Harriet Tubman, at AMC NorthPark thanks to Ford Motor Company and Jackie Bazan. Meanwhile, Digital Promise/Verizon Innovative Learning Schools provided all students at five other Dallas ISD schools with the opportunity to see the film. Samuell High School ECHS sophomore Israel Piña traces his love for teaching to an assignment where he created a lesson plan and taught a whole class. His dream is to work as an educator, put himself through law school and eventually become an immigration lawyer. Two Dallas ISD high schools will each receive $250,000 worth of support from IBM and AT&T to use AI or 5G connectivity to address real-world educational problems. The P-TECH students at Seagoville and Adamson high schools won the second round of the IBM EdTech Cities Challenge, which tasks students with proposing game-changing ideas.
