Dallas ISD Stories is a new Hub series where district students, teachers and staff share their own stories. My ultimate goal is to go to medical school and become a cardiac surgeon or cardiologist, so I love getting a head start at the School of Health Professions. I want to work with the heart because it’s complicated and you have to be delicate and exact, and I find that so satisfying. I like a challenge and don’t like anything too easy.

The Dallas ISD Language, Literacy, and Social Studies departments held their annual Fall Conference at Bryan Adams High School on Nov. 9. Nearly 300 teachers and staff came together under the theme of “Empowering Students through Disciplinary Literacy” and were treated to keynote speeches from Chief Academic Officer Ivonne Durant and global literacy expert Pam Allyn. Students from Maria Moreno Elementary School’s Ballet Folklorico provided entertainment with a variety of songs and dances. Students from six schools got to see the new movie “Harriet,” which tells the story of heroic abolitionist Harriet Tubman, at AMC NorthPark thanks to Ford Motor Company and Jackie Bazan. Meanwhile, Digital Promise/Verizon Innovative Learning Schools provided all students at five other Dallas ISD schools with the opportunity to see the film. Samuell High School ECHS sophomore Israel Piña traces his love for teaching to an assignment where he created a lesson plan and taught a whole class. His dream is to work as an educator, put himself through law school and eventually become an immigration lawyer. As parents and students walked into Adamson High School on Nov. 12, they were greeted with food and drink options such as hatch green chili and cheese tamales, breaded chicken sliders and hazelnut iced coffee. Two Dallas ISD high schools will each receive $250,000 worth of support from IBM and AT&T to use AI or 5G connectivity to address real-world educational problems. The P-TECH students at Seagoville and Adamson high schools won the second round of the IBM EdTech Cities Challenge, which tasks students with proposing game-changing ideas. According to Dallas Innovates, the general concept for both teams is an application that learns how students are learning, and then gives insights to both teachers and students on how to best focus their efforts in mastering new material. It’s Thursday morning, and J.L. Long Middle School dual language teacher Susan Moreno is noticeably stunned as an auditorium full of news cameras, students, Dallas ISD and state leaders suddenly turn their attention to her. Dallas ISD veteran educators joined together at the 47th Annual National Alliance of Black School Educators conference held in Dallas this week to share lessons learned throughout their careers as leaders in the field of education. The group gathered at the Dining with Divas’ Denim and Diamonds Networking Mixer as the conference kicked off. The event recognized 11 women from across the country who have made a significant impact in education.
