After serving as a Dallas ISD trustee from 2005–2012 and then sitting out a term, Edwin Flores was again elected to the board of trustees in 2015. Abitamim Bharmal is passionate about sharing his love for 3D printing with younger generations. He’s a 17-year-old senior who spent most of his summer earnings on upgrading the makerspaces and STEM labs at several Dallas ISD elementary schools. Bharmal is a student at the School for the Talented and Gifted at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center. He’s an aspiring mechanical engineer and a self-described 3D printing hobbyist. Superintendent Michael Hinojosa said Dallas ISD is immediately implementing new protocols following a Jan. 11 shooting at a district basketball game. Effective Jan. 13–17, bags, purses and backpacks will not be allowed into sporting events. Starting Jan. 20 only clear bags will be allowed into sporting events. The district will also use wand metal detectors as people enter district sporting events. In addition to improving aging school facilities across the district, a proposal could leverage a 2020 bond election to address longtime historical inequities in neighborhoods that were redlined and segregated decades ago. Sobering data shows how redlining–which was the historical practice of denying access of services to certain races or ethnicities living in certain areas–directly correlates to current areas of high poverty and high needs in the City of Dallas. Las oficinas de Equidad Racial y de Inscripción realizarán varios talleres en bibliotecas locales para familias interesadas en solicitar admisión a escuelas especializadas de Dallas ISD. El primer taller tuvo lugar el 8 de enero en la sucursal en el oeste de Dallas. Students at O.W. Holmes Middle School capped off National Computer Science Week by dedicating one hour last month to learning about computer programming. The “Hour of Code” is organized by Code.org and started as a one-hour introduction to computer science meant to demystify the “code” that goes on under the hood of a computer. Students at O.W. Holmes were guided through game-like programs by volunteers from Amazon. This exposure to coding helped them see future career opportunities at technology companies like Amazon.
