The Dallas Public Library is making it possible for more Dallas homes to have internet access by having mobile hotspots available for check out at 10 branches starting March 2. Meanwhile, a grant from the 1Million Project Foundation is providing mobile internet access for about 5,000 Dallas ISD high school students. The new DPL program will provide 900 mobile hotspots at the identified library locations to give residents the opportunity to access online resources for up to 30 days at home. As for many prospective first-generation college students, Zamantha Romero and her parents were unfamiliar with the steps on the road to higher education. Romero is a junior at W. H. Adamson High School and plans to attend college after graduating. Seeking guidance, she applied to become a mentee of the Leadership Forward Mentoring Program, a non-profit that recruits professionals to volunteer as mentors for Adamson and Sunset High School students. A new report shows that Dallas ISD continues to retain a higher number of effective teachers–which in turn is improving student performance–under the Teacher Excellence Initiative. Meanwhile, TEI is expected to bring Dallas ISD an additional $28 million in funds from the state under House Bill 3.
