Dallas ISD schools will be closed for the remainder of the school year. Gov. Greg Abbott announced on April 17 that public and private schools will remain closed for the rest of the school year to help combat the spread of COVID-19. Abbott said he made the decision based on advice of doctors and health officials. While school buildings are closed, students’ education continues through at-home learning. Risking their own health, members of the Dallas ISD Family & Community Engagement team have been voluntarily going into the community for the past three weeks to personally deliver gift cards and care packages to Dallas ISD families impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. The Dallas Mavericks donated 200 $50 Kroger gift cards, and the community donated about another 100 gift cards. Campuses identified families who had been impacted by COVID-19, whether it be from loss of job or reduction in hours, to receive the gift cards. Three Dallas ISD schools rank among the 2020 Best High Schools top 20 list, according to U.S. News & World Report. The School for the Talented and Gifted (TAG) at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center took the No. 6 spot, nationwide, while Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School ranked No. 10, making Texas the only state to have two schools secure a spot in the top 10. Although students might not have access to physical books, they can still check out reading material on a smart phone, tablet or computer. A wide selection of ebooks is accessible through Dallas ISD’s electronic library and the local public library simply by downloading the Sora app, available for iOS and Android devices. The Dallas Regional Chamber (DRC) today announced that Emmitt Smith will serve as the chief spokesman of its campaign to connect workers displaced by the COVID-19 crisis to thousands of available jobs in the Dallas Region. The NFL All-Time Rushing leader, who is also a DRC board member, will appear on billboards and in radio, television, and social media marketing for the DRC’s “Connecting Displaced Workers to Jobs” platform. Dallas ISD this week will begin distributing the 10,000 mobile hotspots it purchased last month to help ensure students have Wi-Fi access while learning from home. Staff worked over the weekend preparing the shipment of hotspots for distribution, placing decals, ensuring they broadcast a Wi-Fi signal, labeling them with students’ names and boxing them per campus. Hotspots will start being delivered to high schools on Monday and middle schools on Tuesday and Wednesday.
