“We have to think of what’s ahead of us instead of focusing on what we can’t control,” says Marysol Ortega, a senior at Thomas Jefferson High School, as she reflects on how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the class of 2020 across the country. Ortega, vice president of her school’s senior class, participates in several sports – soccer, volleyball, cross country running and track and field. She is also an only child in her family and the first generation to go to college. Her senior year has been marked by two major unpredictable situations: a tornado demolishing her school in…
Dallas ISD’s decision to honor our 2020 graduating seniors with virtual rather than in-person commencement ceremonies is based on one overriding concern: the safety of our students, their families and district staff. District leaders made this decision after much discussion and in-depth consultation with trustees, government officials and the area medical community. This is clearly a responsible call in favor of public health. In fact, given Dallas County’s current level of COVID-19 activity, the county’s top health authority, director of Dallas County Health and Human Services Dr. Philip Huang, has specifically advised school leaders against holding any kind of in-person…
Current eight-graders can register online to attend a Dallas ISD Career Institute (CI), where they can learn and master skills that are in high demand in a variety of industries. The district’s three CIs offer industry-standard training and career and technical education in eight diverse pathways. Upon completion of each pathway course, students can earn industry-based certifications and become workforce-ready for high-skill, high-paying, high-demand jobs. Most Dallas ISD traditional high schools will offer access to one of the three CI campuses, depending upon their location. The three CI campuses are scheduled to open at the beginning of the upcoming school…
Dallas ISD is gearing up for the district’s Reading Academies, launching this fall. The academies are the district’s response to last year’s passage of Texas House Bill 3, which requires all kindergarten through third-grade teachers and elementary principals to complete a 10-day reading academy before the end of the 2022-2023 school year. For Dallas ISD, this is an opportunity to help meet the Board of Trustee’s goal of having at least 60 percent of our students reading at grade level in third grade by 2025. By developing more skilled and effective educators, the district will positively impact student literacy achievement. “The HB3…
As senior students across the nation find themselves not being able to finish the school year through the traditional end-of-high-school activities, parents and staff at a Dallas ISD high school created a heart-warming initiative to bring smiles to seniors. The Adopt a Senior campaign was created by a group of parents and several staff members at Sunset High School. Parent Ramona DeLeon says she was sad about seeing her daughter miss prom in the midst of the COVID-19 restrictions, and all she wanted was to find a way to bring a smile to her daughters’ and classmates’ faces. “I thought…
