When students from Edward Cary Middle School started class at Benjamin Franklin Middle School after their home campus was seriously damaged by the Oct. 20 tornado, the new classmates bonded together by discussing a critical topic: what should the school’s mascot be? Franklin Middle School’s mascot is the Falcons and Cary Middle School is the Colt. As she won a national entrepreneurship competition in New York City this month at the age of 18, Jasmine Benton­–a recent graduate of Dallas ISD’s Innovation, Design, Entrepreneurship Academy (IDEA) at James W. Fannin– thought of those who helped set her on her path. At age 11, Benton started her business–Precious Designs–that today refurbishes and reupholsters housewares. Dallas ISD has developed a new class rank policy that will impact the class of 2021 and beyond. The new policy for determining a student’s rank provides a more equitable system across all academic programs and grants students greater freedom to explore and pursue their academic interests. Under the old ranking system, a student’s rank calculation was based on a student’s top 24 course credits, no matter the subject. On Oct. 22,  the Postsecondary Partnerships and Programs Department hosted the P-TECH Associates of Applied Science (AAS) to Bachelor of Applied Arts and Science (BAAS) College Fair at Mountain View College. Assistant Superintendent Usamah Rodgers kicked off this inaugural event that provided a platform for district P-TECH students to learn more information about transferring their AAS degree coursework toward pursuant of their BAAS degree.
