In celebration of School Board Recognition Month, we are spotlighting the nine dedicated unpaid volunteers who serve as Dallas ISD trustees. Dustin Marshall in 2016 was elected to the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees, representing District 2, which includes parts of North and East Dallas. Marshall also serves as CEO of Hazel’s Hot Shot, an expedited freight and logistics company headquartered in Dallas. Marshall joined Hazel’s in 2011 and has successfully tripled the size of the business while increasing profits by more than 1,000 percent. Every year, the federal government and the State of Texas allocate hundreds of millions of dollars in grants and loans for college students. Students who plan to attend a college or university during the 2020-2021 academic year can request funds to pay for higher-ed costs by submitting two forms: Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA). More than 1,500 alumni, current students and neighbors of South Oak Cliff High School joined dozens of district and elected officials for Saturday’s ribbon-cutting held to celebrate the formal opening of the renovated campus. Abitamim Bharmal is passionate about sharing his love for 3D printing with younger generations. He’s a 17-year-old senior who spent most of his summer earnings on upgrading the makerspaces and STEM labs at several Dallas ISD elementary schools. Bharmal is a student at the School for the Talented and Gifted at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center. He’s an aspiring mechanical engineer and a self-described 3D printing hobbyist. Superintendent Michael Hinojosa said Dallas ISD is immediately implementing new protocols following a Jan. 11 shooting at a district basketball game. Effective Jan. 13–17, bags, purses and backpacks will not be allowed into sporting events. Starting Jan. 20 only clear bags will be allowed into sporting events.
