With preliminary data showing students falling behind academically due to the Covid-19 impact on schools, Dallas ISD administrators briefed trustees Oct. 8 on a possible strategy of giving families the option of extended learning time to help mitigate learning loss. Dallas ISD is exploring three different potential options for the 2021–2022 school year that would add learning and enrichment time for some or all students. House Bill 3 offers additional funding for districts that add learning time for elementary students. Beth Poquette Drews teaches Modern Band and Mariachi at L.V. Stockard Middle School and has been with Dallas ISD for her entire teaching career of 19 years. After working as a professional architect for more than a decade-and-a-half, Lorena Toffer found a calling in teaching. She’s a first-year educator and the leading instructor of the Principles of Architecture course at the new Career Institute East. After earning a masters in Architecture at Texas A&M University in 2004, Toffer began working for Corgan – a leading architecture and design firm based in Dallas. To help ensure the safety of students, staff, parents and community members, the Dallas ISD Athletics Department has implemented comprehensive safety measures at athletic events this school year. All ticket sales for athletic events are cashless and no tickets are sold at the gate. Parents and fans can use the GoFan online ticketing platform to purchase tickets ahead of time to avoid lines at the gate.
