From Africa’s Geography to Super Quiz: Inside the Lone Star Challenge

Skyline High School’s gymnasium was transformed into a hub of academic excellence and vibrant school spirit as elementary students from across Dallas ISD gathered for the annual Lone Star Challenge.

The academic event, which serves as the elementary school equivalent to Academic Decathlon, brought together hundreds of students to showcase their intellect and teamwork.

Organized by the Dallas ISD Student Activities Department, the Lone Star Challenge tests nine-member school teams across math, science, literature, and social studies.

This year’s theme focused heavily on Africa, leading students to dive deep into everything from complex medical history to continental geography.

“We liked learning about all the infectious diseases,” said Titus B. from Downtown Montessori at Ida B. Wells Academy. “It was also interesting learning about how scientists developed vaccines and about how the human body works.”

For Gisselle M. from Nancy Moseley Elementary School, the social studies curriculum brought eye-opening realizations about different cultures and history.

“The thing I learned in the Lone Star is that in South Sudan girls have to walk eight hours to get water from a pond,” she said. “Also that the Egyptians kept people’s organs in jars.”

Teams spent their after-school practices learning how to lean on one another to solve the most difficult parts of the study guides.

“The biggest change I see every year is the change from individuals to a team,” said Downtown Montessori coach Leslie Brisendine. “They cheer each other on and encourage each other to learn the materials.”

As focus shifted from the study/practice to competition day, the atmosphere inside the gym balanced academic focus with the joyous energy of a pep rally, complete with the annual parade of costumes and school signs.

For many participants, the challenging Super Quiz finale and the chance to represent their schools made sacrificing a Saturday entirely worth it.

As the final scores were tallied and medals were awarded, students walked away with a newfound sense of self-confidence and pride in their own capabilities.

“Beyond trophies, my LSC students developed lasting habits like critical thinking, teamwork, time management, and resilience,” Brisendine said. “They went from needing help on every step to independently working together, supporting each other, and tackling challenges with persistence.”

With another successful competition in the books, many are already looking forward to keeping the tradition alive next year.
