Dallas ISD students reached new heights at the 2026 Urban Debate National Championship, a weekend defined by intellectual rigor and high-stakes advocacy.
Held at Harvard University, the tournament brought together 22 urban debate leagues across the United States.
For the first time in the history of the Dallas Urban Debate Alliance partnership, a Dallas team advanced to the finals of this prestigious policy debate tournament.
Competing in policy debate rounds that demand deep research and logic, Javier V. and Caleb J. from Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy at A. Maceo Smith, completed ten debates over two days.
Their momentum carried them past the nation’s best, landing them in the final round.
BOMLA wasn’t the only Dallas school making waves in Massachusetts. Phineas and Victoria from School for the Talented and Gifted at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center powered through the national bracket to reach the octofinals, finishing in the top 8.
What has the national circuit on high alert is the age of these competitors. Both the TAG and Obama teams are composed of young debaters who have yet to reach their senior year.
The success of these four students is the culmination of a year-long journey. Policy debate requires students to master complex federal policy topics and defend their positions against the top tier of the 22-league national circuit.
“As the Dallas debaters return home, they bring more than just trophies,” Michelle Read, Student Activities coordinator, said. “They bring proof that the partnership between Dallas ISD and the Dallas Urban Debate Alliance is producing world-class debaters capable of leading the national conversation.”
