April is National Occupational Therapy month and Dallas ISD celebrates the work of Occupational Therapy practitioners who transform the lives of our students by helping them gain independence.

“It’s our job to ensure that students, parents and staff who need this kind of therapy have the information and resources so that these students can access their educational environment to the fullest extent possible,” said Dr. Kiticia James, Dallas ISD’s occupational and physical lead therapist.

School-based occupational therapists and assistants support students’ needs throughout the day by assisting with daily school activities and classroom transitions. They also provide a wide range of services such as physical therapy, ensuring access to assistive technology, gearing into post high school employment, etc. The OT program also provides year-round trainings and resources for parents and staff.

“During school closures due to COVID-19 the OT program continues to serve students both directly and/or via consultative teletherapy,” said Dr. James. “As lead therapist at Dallas ISD, I am thankful to work with the best occupational therapist and assistants to help create magic for our kiddos every day.”

To access assistance and resources, families can visit the OT website or visit the Let’s Talk Special Education Services section.
