Skyline High School celebrates Earth Week

Skyline student Patricia Rios wrote this article

Today is earth day, and it’s the largest environmental campaign in the world. Every year people demonstrate their support for environmental protection. The first Earth Day event originated on April 22, 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson.

Skyline’s lead librarian, Heather Hornor, is in charge of this year’s Earth Week, April 20–24.

“The main goal is to educate students about Earth Day and why we celebrate it,” Mrs. Hornor said.

Skyline’s Green Team held an Earth Day activity, led by Captains Genesis Delgado, Evelyn Perez, and Kimberly Barraza. The Green Team is distributing wristbands made by students before school, during lunch and after school.

Every day they will announce facts about the environment and how students can prevent pollution from getting worse. If a student pledges to help the environment, they will receive a token made out of plastic bottle caps to add on their wristband.

From April 22–23 the library is having a “Join The Race To Make The World A Better Place!” recycle contest. Interior Design participated in this contest two years ago.

Senior Nayely Zavala was one of the participants.

“I learned that you can build a lot of things with things you no longer use,” Nayely said.

Raiders are encouraged to participate in these Earth Week events and get more informed about our Earth and how to help it get better.
