Weiss Elementary students step up to rock STAAR

Rock STAARs were out in force Friday afternoon at Martin Weiss Elementary.

The school at 8601 Willoughby Blvd. held a pep rally to get its third-, fourth-, and fifth-graders excited and motivated for the next week’s STAAR exams. And, since the pep rally’s theme was Be a Rock STAAR, teachers and students wore bright wigs, sunglasses, headbands, and other outfits worthy of a red carpet.

“The idea behind the pep rally is that, at this point, we have done a whole lot of work to make sure our students are ready for their STAAR exams,” Weiss Principal Shundra Brown said. “Now it’s time to celebrate all the hard work that went into getting ready for the test.”

At the pep rally, the school’s Alpha Owls Step Team performed a coordinated dance and skit that spotlight ways to prepare for the STAAR test. In addition to getting across helpful STAAR preparation tips—eat a well balanced breakfast, go to sleep on time, dress in layers in case the testing room is cold, and study—the skit had multiple laugh-out-loud moments that had fellow students cracking up in their seats.

After the skit, the third-, fourth-, and fifth-graders paraded around the campus and received encouraging cheers from younger students.

Throughout the event, Brown told students how proud she was of their preparation for the exam.

“Thank you for everyone’s hard work,” she said. “We want the world to know that we are raising future leaders at Weiss.”
